  4. Because the object represented 
  5. in this pattern is shown in 
  6. white and rotated 90 degrees 
  7. counterclockwise, it is 
  8. unlikely to be spontaneously 
  9. perceived and recognized.

  11. When we look at the 
  12. illustration to the left, we 
  13. initially tend to see a pattern of 
  14. unfamiliar dark fragments. At 
  15. most, the detail in the outlines 
  16. may suggest a map of an 
  17. unrecognizable region. In fact, 
  18. the outline of much of Europe is 
  19. present in the illustration, 
  20. although even with that hint it 
  21. may not be detected. To see 
  22. EuropeΓÇÖs outline, the 
  23. illustration must be rotated 90 
  24. degrees clockwise and the 
  25. central white region rather 
  26. than the black fragments must 
  27. become the primary object of 
  28. awareness.
